Aims
This training aims to give an introduction to transgender identities, experiences and inclusion within the context of the Irish education sector, specifically in primary and post-primary schools.

- Exploring Gender
- Language use around gender identity, expression; gender assigned at birth
- Gender identity development in children
- Gender vs Sexual Orientation
- Definitions including cisgender, transgender, intersex, non-binary Transgender Youth
- Experiences and potential risk factors associated with trans young people
- Overview of different areas of transition for trans adults
- Social transition and youth transition Trans inclusion and allyship in the school setting
- Understanding the school context for trans youth and families
- Working with individual trans people and with families
- Transition plans within the school, including telling classmates and other practicalities
- Bullying
- Building trans inclusion in at service level
- Resources – Teaching materials and books for different age groups
Learning Outcomes
- Upon completion of this training, participants will: –
- Understand transgender identities, the importance of names, pronouns and other elements of transition, and correct language use
- Be aware of broader issues affecting transgender youth in Ireland, and how it impacts on students in an education setting
- Be empowered to promote transgender inclusion, speak confidently on transgender issues, and interrupt transphobic speech or acts
- Identify key areas in which to promote trans inclusion within the school, with practical steps for policy, guidelines and implementation
